On November 11th the inaugural run of the Indiana First Bank Veterans Marathon and Half Marathon was held on the Ghost Town Trail beginning at Saylor Park in Black Lick. The event by all accounts was a resounding success and there are a number of people we, the co-race directors, would like to thank for helping to bring this dream to a reality. First, a heartfelt thank you goes to Tim Kroenwetter, CEO, Amy Murphy, and the employees of Indiana First Bank for their financial support and assistance with the race. Thanks also to the many Mile Sponsors for the donations of money and products, Indiana County Career Link, Renda Broadcasting, and the Indiana Gazette for their coverage of this historic run. Thanks to Randy Thomas of Citizen’s Ambulance Service, Greg Zimmerman of the Indiana County Emergency Management Service, Ed Patterson of the Indiana County Parks and Recreation Department, Burrell Township officials and Park Board, Sam Lute Security Service, Sheriff Bob Fyock, and Brenda Stormer and staff of the Office of Veteran’s Affairs for their assistance with pre-race and race day planning . Thank you to the employees of the Indiana County Parks and Recreation Department for all their work on the Ghost Town Trail and at Saylor Park. There was an opening ceremony that was well attended by the runners and spectators. Participating in the ceremony were members of the IUP ROTC under the direction of Captain Justin Mullins, State Representative Dave Reed, County Commissioners Rod Ruddock and Patty Evanko, Sheriff Bob Fyock, WWII veteran Clarence Ray, and Indiana Road Runners Club members Sara Necciai and Dick Gigliotti. Gratitude is extended to The Gingerbread Man Running Store and Whitey’s Peetza and Eatery for helping with the packet pick up. Thank you to the members of the Todd Bird Club, United High School cross country team, employees of Indiana First Bank, Evergreen Conservancy, Citizen’s Ambulance Service, Indiana County Emergency Management Service, Bill Orr, Rick Duffalo, Dr. Steven Pagano, family and friends, and the many individuals who volunteered their time and energy that day to provide assistance with parking, the aid stations, registration, post-race support, and as cheerleaders to the many runners who participated. A special acknowledgement goes to the marathon and half marathon runners who came not only from Indiana County but from the Pittsburgh area and from as far away as New Mexico. Chris Weiland provided a beautiful handmade award for the first place runners in both races. Last but not least, the race co-directors would like to recognize and show their appreciation to the Indiana Road Runners Club for their support of this endeavor. The race proceeds benefitted the Indiana County Veterans Assistance Fund and although the total amount of the donation has not yet been finalized, we are proud to be of assistance to our local veterans.
